Reasons to Maintain Your Window Screens

3 windows with window screens

If you are like most homeowners, you probably keep your windows sparkling clean, so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery surrounding your property.

However, when you clean your windows—do you also clean your window screens? If not, you may not realize that dirty, damaged screens can result in frustrating problems, like grimy windows, poor air quality, and expensive storm damage.

Just by regularly maintaining your window screens, you can dodge the problems listed above and enjoy all the following benefits instead!

Why Should I Keep My Window Screens in Good Condition?

Wondering why keeping your window screens squeaky clean and clear of rips, tears, and holes is so important? Well, clean window screens:

1. Keep your windows cleaner

When it is stormy, it is common for wind, rain, or sleet to accumulate on your window screens, leaving them dirty. If you do not clean your window screens, the grime will splash onto your windows the next time it rains, leaving them with an unsightly film of dirt.

It is much better to clean your window screens frequently, so even when it storms, your windows still sparkle!

2. Improve your home’s curb appeal

Just like flaky siding, a damaged roof, or fading paint will detract from your exterior’s appearance—dirty window screens will too.

Freshen up your home’s exterior by cleaning your window screens regularly. Plus, when you are ready to sell your home, clean screens will signal to future buyers that you care about your home enough to keep up with the details, automatically making your property more appealing!

3. Protect your windows from storm damage

During gusty winds or powerful snowstorms, it is not uncommon to see flying debris. If an item strikes your window during a storm, it can cause the glass to break and the window to shatter.

Window screens provide an extra line of defense against storm damage. However, if your screens are brittle or worn out, they will not create an effective buffer. Keeping your screens in great shape is the best way to protect your windows from potential damage.

4. Improve your home’s air quality

Could you imagine never replacing the filter in your heating and cooling units? Probably not, right? That is gross! Well, when you open your windows, your screens “filter” the outside air into your home. When your screens are dusty, they taint the air entering your home, so it is like having a dirty screen in the HVAC vent.

It is important to keep your screens clean to ensure your home’s air quality is as clear as possible. This is especially important if you have family members with allergies or asthma since trapped dirt can also lead to mold or mildew growth on your window screens.

5. Save your money

Just like with your siding, windows, roofing system, or other exterior features, proper maintenance will extend the lifespan of your window screens. By keeping your window screens clean, you can reduce the amount of money you will spend on repair costs. Plus, the longer your screens last, the longer you can wait to replace them.

6. Keep pests away

When your window screens are clean, they are less likely to develop tears or holes. However, once damaged, your broken screens provide an attractive entryway into your home for insects, mosquitoes, rodents, and other unwelcome pests.

7. Prevent water damage to your windowsills

Screens provide an extra barrier between your windowsill and the elements. Without window screens (or with torn, broken screens), rainwater may pool on your windowsills and cause moisture damage, like rotting or mold growth.
