Location: West St. Paul, MN
Renovations: Home Addition; Accessible Bathroom; Siding Replacement; Porch and Ramp
When a West St. Paul homeowner set out to remodel their rambler, the goal was clear: to create a comfortable, one-level living space so their spouse could return home from managed care. With that vision in mind, they turned to Beissel Window & Siding, a company they already knew and trusted.
Collaborative Planning for Accessibility
The consultation process was thoughtful and collaborative. Plans were drawn up, reviewed, and revised four different times as the scope of work evolved. Each step allowed the homeowner to refine the project, ensuring the remodel would fully support their spouse’s accessibility needs while also improving the overall comfort of the home.
Remodeling for One-Level Living
The homeowner’s main challenge was adapting the house to make it accessible, functional, and welcoming. To meet that need, our team reconstructed a three-hundred fourteen square foot addition with a full basement. This addition included a new main bedroom with an ensuite bathroom designed for aging in place, a laundry area relocated from the basement to the main level, and wider entries both indoors and out to allow for wheelchair access.
The bathroom featured universal design elements, including an oversized, wheelchair-accessible shower with an Onyx base and wall system. The first floor was converted to wood flooring, with the exception of the main bathroom, which received tile installed with no transition for easy movement throughout the house.
To further enhance accessibility, our crew added an exterior ramp and covered porch, creating both function and enjoyment for the homeowners.
Alongside the addition, Beissel Window & Siding updated the home’s exterior. The outdated metal siding, which was no longer available, was replaced with vertical board-and-batten vinyl siding, paired with vinyl shake gables to give the home a unique and attractive appearance.
Managing Challenges Throughout the Project
Like many large remodels, there were choices to be made along the way, including adjustments to balance cost expectations. Weather also posed challenges during the winter, particularly while digging the foundation. Even so, the project moved forward with care, and the homeowner was able to continue living in the house throughout construction, preparing the space for the spouse’s return.
A Home with Future Possibilities
An additional noteworthy detail was the lower-level family room and office space completed as part of the addition. With southern exposure, the space receives abundant natural light and could serve as a future bedroom with the right egress. For a family looking ahead, this space could also accommodate in-home care needs with the eventual addition of a bathroom.
The homeowner expressed deep satisfaction with the finished remodel. The project successfully created a one-level living environment, offering comfort, safety, and dignity for the family.
Beissel Window & Siding is proud to help homeowners make thoughtful changes that could improve both daily living and long-term comfort. Whether through accessible design, exterior improvements, or home additions, our team is committed to solutions that work for the house and the people who call it home.
