Lower Your Utility Bills With New Energy-Efficient Windows

January 10, 2023    Beissel Window & Siding

New energy-efficient windows installed in a home.

Up to 30% of the energy used to heat your home this winter is compensating for the heat loss through your windows. Ouch! That means part of your hard-earned money is going “right out the window.” But you can change that with replacement windows.

Replacing your outdated, leaky windows will not only boost your curb appeal, home security, and indoor comfort but also provide consistent savings on your utilities.

Save on Monthly Utility Bills

When you look at the facts about the money you’re spending on heating and cooling your home year-round, it makes sense financially to install new windows.

Non-certified new windows vs. ENERGY STAR-certified replacement windows

There is a difference between replacing your windows with non-certified new windows vs. replacing them with ENERGY STAR-certified windows. In fact, you can save 12% more when you have ENERGY STAR-certified products installed in your home. (And you’ll save significantly more compared to your current windows.)

Your savings will vary depending on if your current windows are single or double-pane

According to ENERGY STAR, if you replace your single-pane windows with ENERGY STAR certified windows, you can save between $101 and $583 a year. Of course, the exact savings vary based on your weather, utility rate, and your home’s insulation.

Choosing the best replacement window for your Minnesota home

The window type that is best for your home is based on your area’s climate. With the harsh winters we experience in St. Paul and Minneapolis, gas-filled windows with low-E coatings (to reduce heat loss), and a low U-factor are a wise choice. Gas filling, frame glazing, and window function also contribute to your savings.

ENERGY STAR—the highest standard, and worth the investment

When you invest in replacement windows with the ENERGY STAR label, they exceed energy code requirements and include performance ratings from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC).

NFRC ratings make it simple to compare various window products you are considering because they actually include performance ratings. They disclose the “bottom line” on how that particular window will perform in your climate zone. Simply look at the NFRC label to choose the optimal product for Minnesota.

How window energy performance is measured

The NFRC label displays the energy performance of the window and lists information about the manufacturer to help you choose the best window for your home. Products are rated primarily in two areas:

  1. U-factor: This describes the rate of heat flow through your window, or how well the window keeps heat from escaping. A lower U-factor means the window has better thermal resistance or better insulation.
  1. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): This describes the amount of solar radiation admitted through the window and usually ranges from 0 to 1. For Minnesota winters, the higher the SHGC, the better.

The value of multiple panes in your replacement windows

The more panes you have, the greater your energy savings each month because of the increased insulation from heat and cold. Filling the space between the panes with a gas like argon or krypton will further reduce heat transfer through your windows.

Energy-efficient window frames

Vinyl or fiberglass frames deliver exceptional insulation to your home, contributing to your energy savings monthly.

Other perks of ENERGY STAR-certified windows

Some states offer rebates or incentives to boost your home’s energy efficiency—including window replacements. You may even qualify to receive a federal tax credit if you replace your windows with ENERGY STAR-certified products.

Warm Up Your Home with New Windows

Tired of the chilly drafts your current windows allow into your home? Replacing your windows not only saves you on monthly utility bills but also significantly increases the indoor comfort level of your greater Twin Cities area home—eliminating leaks that cause drafts. Better insulation keeps your window glass warmer and contributes to an even temperature throughout your home.

At Beissel Window & Siding, we offer financing to make your home upgrade convenient. We value and appreciate our veterans and seniors, and we give them a discount. Get a free consultation for window services.
